US midterms: Indian-American Nabeela Syed wins election, to be the youngest member in Illinois legislature

NEW DELHI: In the midterms, the Samosa Caucus members- Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Raja Krishnamoorthi and now Shri Thanedar- stole most of the spotlight when it came to Indian-Americans in the contest.
But the Congress apart, several Indians have also won the race to state legislatures. Among them is Nabeela Syed, who won from 51st House district of Illinois, flipping incumbent Republican Chris Bos.
All of 23, Nabeela will be the youngest member of the state assembly, and also the first South Asian in the Illinois legislature.

Nabeela was born and raised in Palatine, Illinois, and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in Political Science and Business Administration.
Seen in a hijab in most pictures online, Nabeela is “a strong advocate for promoting interfaith dialogue and empowering young Muslim women to lead,” her personal webpage says.
Amid the abortion controversy raging across the US, Nabeela has made her position clear. On her campaign page, she promises to “stand up to extreme politicians and fight to keep the government out of decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor.”
